Hello everyone, my name is Linda Wonnacott.
I live and work for 6 months each year, from the beginning of November to the end of April, as a volunteer teacher, in The Gambia, West Africa
On my last visit I found Kurumbo Lodge, Kartong when walking my dog in the forest and became good friends with Maria, the lovely Dutch owner and her husband Jerreh, a Gambian.
My working days are hectic so I need somewhere to relax after school Tne lodge will be perfect for me so I will be in residence from 9 November.
As a long time veggie/vegan ( 52 years ), I am happy to cook for any guests. I also bake delicious cakes.
Google Kurumbo Lodge, Kartung, The Gambia for info.
I am on face book for contact.
This morning’s picture below to find me.
Welcome, Linda! How long have you been volunteering in The Gambia? I’m sure it feels really great to have found a place to reset after school days– I love discovering new places like that. I hope you’ll share more about your veg experiences during your time in West Africa! 🙂
7 a.m. good morning Jaclyn.
I have been spending half the year in The Gambia for 10 years.
Some years I work at Tanka Tanka ( the only mental health facility in the country ). It was built by a Dutch charity. There are no Gambian psychiatrists so they rely on visiting Cuban specialists. The regime is a bit Victorian. most of my Gambian friends are frightened by mental health issues and just call everyone ” mad ” who needs to go there.
I also support a charity that helps to empower and educate women and children in provincial villages and more importantly, campaigns against FGM. This has been made illegal but old traditions die hard.
Looking forward to daily sunshine when I return
