Okay, so looking for suggestions in Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Tokyo for places, or neighbourhoods, to stay in. I think we will just be in Fukuoka for one night (we fly in to there), then head to Kyoto for a few days (day trip to Osaka?), then do our walk to Tokyo (not the whole way, there are trains involved), then we fly to HK for a few days… All suggestions are welcome!!! I’ve been told that Kyoto is the best place to spend time, so we’ll be there for 3 or 4 days… only 2 in Tokyo… I need to find out where the vegan pudding store is there… does anyone know??
We haven’t been to Fukuoka, but both Kyoto and Tokyo have excellent mass transportation systems so wherever you stay, it is really easy to get around. Especially if you use the Google Maps app (you can pre-download maps for each city so need to worry about coverage or roaming charges). I am not familiar with all the neighborhoods, but during our visits to Tokyo, we found it really convenient to stay anywhere between Tokyo Station and Imperial Palace. And then hopping on the metro to explore other neighborhoods and sites. In Kyoto, we found buses more convenient than their metro, especially when visiting the gardens and temples, which were often a bit out of the center of town. We stayed in two locations in Kyoto, one near Kyoto station, and the other in a quiet neighborhood closer to the Kiyomizu-dera temple. Both felt safe and convenient, but we preferred the later a bit more. Have a wonderful trip!!!
one more suggestion … purchasing your JR Pass (for all inter-city and some local trains) is much cheaper abroad than it is if you have to purchase it in Japan. Enjoy your trip.
We actually got rail passes with out hiking tour, so we just asked them to add on an extra week for us 🙂
