After a longer break from travelling than I was expecting, I’m going to “jump back in” with a trip to Brighton, then a couple more days in London. I hear these are pretty good places to be vegan but feel free to hit me with must see and must dos while there!

Back from a Canada/America trip and more recently from Pig Village in Spain, no idea where to go next and when. Will need another week or two to fully recover from travelling!

Guys! I’m in Quebec City for only two days and I need to try maple taffy before I go! But I heard that it’s not always vegan and I don’t really have time to go looking for specific companies and contacting them directly to find out so can anyone tell me where’s good for vegan maple taffy preferably in the city centre?
-
Hey Gillian,
Maple syrup taffy, or tire d’érable, is just boiled maple syrup poured over snow. Is there another kind I am not aware of?
-
Hey Gillian,
Ive never been to Quebec but recently just went to a maple syrup farm here in Ontario. Like Cody mentioned, maple syrup taffy is usually maple syrup boiled to a certain degree and poured on snow, These treat are usually eaten when served. Are you perhaps referring to maple fudge? if so then that is not vegan. If you want to take a…[Read more] -
I heard that maple syrup is traditionally prepared with animal fat to prevent foaming, it’s rare now but apparently it still happens:
It would be quite unlikely to be the case with the average maple taffy place but just want to be sure…

Thank you so much for sharing that @gee0dee
I would recommend finding out which syrups are vegan and just ask when you are there. If it is a rare thing now, then they may be using a kosher maple syrup. *fingers crossed* Hope you enjoy your time in Quebec.

yes thanks for sharing. @Gillian

I can hardly find any info online as to which specific brands are vegan which is why I thought I’d try asking here but got something maple-flavoured from a vegan store so I guess that’s as close as I’m gonna get. Oh well, off to Washington DC tomorrow!

@gee0dee Hope you have a great trip. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

I’ve just booked a week-long trip to Montreal and Quebec City, followed by three days in Washington DC, heading out there in six days’ time. Getting nervous now! I thought I’d covered everything, research-wise, but in typical me-fashion I only become aware of the existence of a vegan (“healthy”) food tour in Montreal which only runs from May.…[Read more]

My favourite places to eat in Mtl are Crudessence, Aux Vivres, and the Copper Branch (several locations)

Montreal is a really cool town. I used to go there near every summer when I was in my teens & early twenties. I’m sure you will enjoy it. And if you have some time, Québec City is about 2 1/2 hours NE of Montreal. Old Québec has much of the ambiance and aesthetics of some of Europe’s more traditional towns. Have a great time!

Definitely go to NuVegan in DC!

In serious consideration of travelling to the USA, but would be alone and on a modest budget. Can’t do dorm rooms in hostels or couch-surfing because I do far better with private accommodation but would still like to meet people in the area. From anyone who’s done this sort of thing before tips and suggestions are very welcome!
-
Whereabouts are you thinking of visiting in the US? Anywhere specifically?
-
I’d like to visit New York and Toronto (yeah I know it’s in Canada) again, and also try places in French Canada such as Quebec and Montreal. I’d also like to visit Seattle, San Francisco and LA, because a uni friend is originally from there and invited me to stay but unfortunately is not vegan so I’d have concerns that I’d be seen as being awkward…[Read more]

Those are great places to visit! I loved NYC when I traveled there last year and LA is really cool too. I would definitely keep that friend in mind even if they aren’t vegan because it can be nice to have someone who you know when you’re in an unfamiliar place. Plus sometimes staying with them is a good way to introduce them to some vegan foods 🙂

I’ve heard of AirBnB but not sure if it’s like a house swap where the other person would also be staying at your place. Will look into it more!
-
I’d personally be too worried having someone stay at my place without me there but I admire those who can do that sort of thing 🙂 Airbnb is looking increasingly appealing, plenty of private rooms which I’d actually prefer to having the place to myself simply because the responsibility of looking after someone’s entire home is a bit scary. Will…[Read more]

I thought VX in London was such a spunky little place… Only a few minute walk from the train station (can remember which one…) and they’ve opened a second location I think… Maybe in Brighton??
I usually use the Happy Cow app as my vegan bible when I’m away and it’s gotten me out of a jam many a time… I didn’t see a VX in Brighton but will Google it and see.
You should go to Camden Market in London, and while there, to Cookies and Scream, which has great vegan ice cream with all sorts of toppings. And as @jenns said, Vx is really good, a little expensive, but what isn’t? They also usually carry stuff from Ms. Cupcake, which does amazing stuff. There’s also a Ms. Cupcake in Brixton. And Maoz is a great…[Read more]
I’ll be staying in the Islington / King’s Cross area so I won’t be too far from Camden and I fully intend to go back there 🙂
