I got to spend an awesome year in the Philippines and met more than my fair share of incredibly sweet pigs, oxen, cats, dogs, chickens, bunnies…. I love interacting with animals while traveling because the language barrier is temporarily lifted 🙂

    • Btw Kristen! I’m wondering if you want all of the posts cross-posted on IG and here for this contest?

      • @ejbradfo .. yes please post to both IG and VeganTravel for each entry! 🙂 Also.. what’s going on with the pig on the ground? He looks in bad shape (that wire around his leg and the spray paint on his side) 🙁 🙁

        • Alright will do!
And yeah, that pig had been through a lot. I was visiting an indigenous community in the Philippines, and the hosts had carried her over probably by binding her feet and carrying her upside down, hence the wire/string on her ankle. The spray paint is probably just for identification, and she had some kind of sore that was leaking onto the ground. For the most part, I still feel like these pigs had a better life than the ones being raised in US factory farms, but they were definitely regarded as food and not pets. That trip was really challenging because there were hundreds of people visiting the village, and they would bring in a couple pigs each day for dinner, slaughtering & cooking them in very close proximity to where people were having meetings. A positive outcome was that by the end of the week the line for people requesting a vegetarian alternative had multiplied so many times over — The first day I was cooking vegan for just myself, and within a few days the kitchen was churning out giant woks filled with just veggies 🙂
