Hi! I’m Dareios, Im 23 years old, and I’ve been vegan for about 3.5 years now. I was raised vegetarian and finally started exposing myself to the health and ethical issues of dairy and eggs in college and from there it was a pretty easy decision. I’ve lived in Vancouver Canada most of my life but have travelled to Greece several times as I have family there and in 2014 I went travelling by myself with my bike around France and Spain for 2 months and then last summer I went to Chiang Mai for another months. I’m really keen to learn more about location independence and digital nomadic living but I have yet to start living that way successfully. I would love to hear from people here who are living that way because I know that I want to spend the rest of my life working form anywhere spreading the vegan message doing something actually meaningful I just haven’t quite figured out how to get there yet!
Wow, I’ve always thought about travelling around Europe by bike, how was it? Location independence is a really interesting concept, I’ve always considered it too, but having grown up so internationally, I sometimes feel like I also want the kinds of roots that other people have. The grass is always greener on the other side, huh? You have a really great goal though, hopefully you will find a way to accomplish it!!
It was a really rewarding and really challenging experience! I started in Amsterdam, cycled through Holland and Belgium into France down to San Sebastian Spain. Definitely something I wanna do again at some point!
Welcome, Dareios! I’ve always been a fairly grounded, rooted person, but your goal of living nomadically and spreading a compassionate message while still “playing the game” and doing the things most of us need to do to be functioning members of society is becoming more and more appealing to me everyday. I think you’ve certainly found the right place for more information about living nomadically here at VeganTravel– we’ve got a great community growing here with like-minded folks who have very valuable life experiences to share. I look forward to getting to know you better!
thanks Jaclyn!
Welcome to the site Dareios! A few of our sponsored travelers (@vegannomad, @codyk, @mindfulwanderlust), are pretty much living your dreams of mostly nomadic living. I’m sure they would be happy to give you some tips and ideas.
thanks Alan!
Hi Dareios! Welcome welcome! 🙂 Kristin here. Back in 2010-ish I stumbled upon the likes of Chris Guillebeau, Corbett Barr, and Tim Ferriss. That changed everything for me. I ended up quitting my 9-5 job in 2011 and moved into a van (to try and eat at every vegan restaurant in the US). I thought I’d be gone for a year or so and then go back to my “normal” life. But I fell in love with the minimalist and nomadic lifestyle and now almost 5 years later I’m still location independent and traveling full-time. Weeee!!! Haha.. it’s definitely a LOT of work and I’m not swimming in passive income “dough” just yet (yet being the key word, ::wink::). But I work hard everyday toward my goal of being debt-free and continuing to travel and work (freelance at the moment) from the “road.” I’d be happy to talk with you more about it but that’s my short story version of what I’ve been up to. 🙂
thanks for the message Kristen! I’ve heard your story and am sure I could learn a lot from you! I’d love to talk more about it sometime if you’re up for it!
@dareioskatsanikakis Hey Dareios, Glad you joined Vegan Travel!!!
My wife Giselle (@mindfulwanderlust) and I quit our jobs back in February of 2012 and have pretty much been travelling full-time since then. With the exception of a few months here and there. We started a website called Mindful Wanderlust where we travel around the world compassionately and ethically and show how easy it really is to travel as a Vegan. We have been everywhere from Grenada to Bhutan to Egypt to Thailand and we continue adding countries to our list. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to send me a message 🙂
Thanks Cody! How much would you say I would need to have saved up to just start doing that same sort of thing?
@dareioskatsanikakis It definitely depends on where you want to travel. Giselle and I would spend $800-1000 CDN for a month in Thailand. While a month in Turkey could run us $1500 and in Europe you could easily add an extra $500 to that number. That is also for 2 of us. When we first started travelling back in 2012 we left home with $30,000 and it lasted us almost 2 years of full-time travel. We did a lot of volunteering and even got asked to work at an Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand (We didn’t get paid but they gave us room and board in exchange for 6 days of work)
If you head to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia etc…..) your dollar will definitely go a lot farther then say if you travelled to Europe or North America.
If you have any more questions please ask away. 🙂
Welcome Dareios 🙂
Sure, anytime! @dareioskatsanikakis
